At the beginning of the trailer, there is a long shot of the stock location and the family that will be featured in the film. The following characters seem very happy in their environment though it is shown that the family is separated. So already the audience knows that there is something dysfunctional about them. The non diegetic sound seems fairly steady and standard. But as there is more exposure of the family life as the sound begins to darken a bit but its rarely noticeable; this fits with Todorov’s theory of the equilibrium in disruption because as the family reach a yard sale, the young girl “Em” the protagonist discovers a strange looking antique box and the sound gets louder suggesting that the following box will not be bringing any luck to the family but rather something evil. There are slow fades as the “Em” picks up the box to purchase, this therefore gives the idea that the evil is slowly making its way to its destination. This is a convention of many supernatural/possession films, where someone will find a prob that contains some sort of spirit which later possesses them or a member in their family. There are continuous usage of fades into black and dissolves as Em finally opens the box there is parallel edits, however before that her father had difficulty trying to open the box himself as he says “who ever made this didnt want anybody to open it” which is ironic because then Em opens it; in the scene a long shot is used to disclose the surroundings which is quite isolated as its just her bed a table by the window, the long shot exaggerates the size of her room to make her appear me vulnerable. As she opens the box, when the lock turns there is synchronous sound that further emphasises the thought that now the box has been the evil has been released. After that the edit become quicker and so does the sound, we now know that Em does not feel normal and the audience is exposed to the change that comes upon her. the scene at the kitchen table when Em, her sister and her father are eating breakfast, there is eyeline match as Em’s father rebuked her she then stabs him with the fork she was eating with so now the audience are aware that Em’s attitude has been altered. A tagline shown reading “based on a true story” this is a convention of many supernatural/possession films because they take inspiration of reality to prove to the audience that in fact situations like this take place in reality; this further reinforces the fear in the audience because now they will become conscience that this can possibly happen to them and also the fear of the unknown is revealed. We now get the impression that this is due to the box because it then fades to scene where the box opens with itself with no helping hand during the night, which takes the connotation that the possession has now begun. Therefore it leaves the audience at the edge of their seats because they now know that something distressing is about to happen. More of the narrative has been revealed as the father travels to seek help from a Rabbi who informs him that the box is occupied by an evil spirit, claiming “the spirit is a taker of children” point in time to the long of Em standing in an isolated gas station in the middle of the night in her night dress which looks like a hospital gown; this gives the connotation that there is something deeply wrong with her but as a matter of fact this is something that a doctor cannot cure, which is proven as Em’s mother takes her to the hospitality to try and put an end to it but all fails as the demon even takes over the hospital facility and it is shown in the body scan. She screams out and moths fly out her mouth. Moths are often spotted in Horror films due to the fear that many people hold against them so the audience will feel frightened. Strapline read “darkness lives inside” which further emphasises the possession that has come over the young child. Non-diegetic Synchronous sound continues as the edit quicken, there is then silence as a scene of the father sitting on Em’s bed reading an extract of the Bible (perhaps to reach into contact with the demon inside her) there is a close up of Em’s showing that the reading does not have any effect on her as her facial expression is very composed. Then there are more scene of horrific imagery of the possession as the music gets louder. The music sounds like a church choir singing a hymn, to further reinforce religion linked with supernatural beings. At the end of the trailer, there is a black screen which is on for a couple of seconds but then a medium shot of Em in a bathroom, a close up to show she looks very distraught as she is crying and she has her mouth open with a torch help to it, there is an overvoice speaking “there is something inside her”; she is clothed in all white to show her innocence and purity. The there is a stab where the audience is exposed to the demon inside Em as it reaches out onto her tongue. The name of the film is now revealed along with the Producer, which is used to persuade the audience to watch the film.
